Views of and from our new Durham location

We went to the Durham Bull's athletic park this weekend to catch batting practice and the game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The weather was beautiful and, as always, it was a good time at the American Tobacco Campus. Here is a view from our seats showing the new Tobacco Road Sports Cafe (right in the middle of the photo, bottom floor of the red brick building). During batting practice we stood on the Tobacco Road patio with others, trying to catch (or not get hit by) balls coming over the Blue Monster.
Construction is moving fast. In the past week the painting was completed, the floors installed, the bar finished, the lights and speakers hooked up. We're hoping to open in the next few weeks. We may not be open in time for the first home game against the Tides, but it shouldn't be long after that. View the Durham Bulls schedule here and the Durham Performing Arts Center here. Also, we're hiring for all front and back of house positions (except bartender). Click here to learn more.

Tobacco Road in Durham, Coming VERY Soon!

It has been too long since we last posted, so you may have already heard the news--we are opening a new location in Durham's American Tobacco complex! Construction is well underway and we are planning on opening in early April. The above photo is a view from inside the new Tobacco Road. You can see the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) to the right.

This photo is a view from what will be our 5200 sq. ft. deck at the back of the restaurant. As you can see, we've got a great view of the Durham Bulls ball park. In fact, the Durham Bull is located on our patio (see below).

Our new Durham location will feature the same fresh, delicious food, the same focus on delivering exceptional service and an atmosphere that is great for sports fans of all ages (including a wall of HDTVs and recliners). But, we are also striving to create a unique environment that fits well with the American Tobacco complex and the city of Durham. New features will include:
  • Stadium-style seating, guaranteeing a good seat for everyone
  • A wall of windows that opens our double-sided bar to the deck
We can't express how excited we are about this new location. We have always enjoyed going to the Bulls games and just spending time on the beautiful American Tobacco complex. Now we get to be neighbors with the DPAC and Durham Bulls--not to mention Burt's Bees (my favorite natural body product line!), Bronto Software, Fox 50, KeySource Bank, McKinney, NPR, the Art Institute and many more! Stay tuned for more updates on our Durham location.

Join us for our first New Year's Eve party!

With all of our focus on the holidays, New Year's Eve seems to sneak up on us every year. Inevitably, the evening comes and we haven't made plans. At that point our options are usually limited--many restaurants, bars and clubs are reservation-only on New Year's Eve. As a result, we often stay home on New Year's Eve. This year, Tobacco Road is hosting its first New Year's Eve party, with all of our fellow procrastinators in mind. Here are a few reasons why our New Year's Eve party might appeal to you:

  1. No cover charge and no reservations. So, if the evening comes and you haven't made plans but want to go out and celebrate, stop by Tobacco Road!
  2. New Year's Eve drink specials. Not only do you not have to pay just to get in the door, you can also take advantage of our great New Year's Eve drink specials.
  3. Party favors! It is a party, after all. Join us for great music and party favors (including noise makers) to help welcome 2010.
  4. You can't miss the ball drop. We'll have it on our 40+ flat screen HD TVs.

We Need a Kids Menu! Help Design It and You Can Win...

We consider ourselves very lucky to attract a large number of families, including kids of all ages. Our list of kids menu items is printed on our main menu but we'd like to offer a kids menu that kids can write, draw and play games on (tic tac toe, sudoku...). Rather than purchasing a generic kids menu online, we'd like to invite area artists of ALL ages to submit designs for the Tobacco Road kids menu. We'll select a winning design for each month. Each winner can choose one of the following gifts: a $50 Tobacco Road Sports Cafe gift card OR a kids party for up to 10 kids, including kids lunches and video game competitions on both a Wii and XBox.

So, start sketching out your ideas for a Tobacco Road kids menu. We'll accept submissions on an ongoing basis but the first winner will be selected at the end of this month. Here are the guidelines:

  1. The kids menu should be black text/ink on white paper.
  2. Paper size can be either 8.5x11 inches (letter), 8.5x14 inches (legal) or 11x17 inches (tabloid).
  3. The menu can be sketched by hand or created in a design program (Word, PowerPoint, Photoshop, InDesign...).
  4. There is no limit on how many menu designs you can submit.
  5. The only thing that HAS to be included somewhere on the menu is, of course, the kids menu. All items are $4.95 and include a side.
  6. We suggest including games as well as drawings that can be colored in. Depictions of Tobacco Road sports teams, moments, historic landmarks, etc. might be a good place to start.
  7. Email your submission as a pdf attachment to amy@tobaccoroadsportscafe.com.
